Get rid of fat

from around the face

Facial liposuction can present unique and challenging dilemmas, but the procedure is possible and widely used as a way to enhance one’s features. Getting liposuction around the face is, perhaps surprisingly, quite common.

We know that you can get liposuction around the tummy area, but can you get liposuction around the face, too? We don’t usually think of the face as an area that “collects” fat. At least, not in the same way that your belly can be a kind of epicenter for excess fat.

Getting Liposuction Around the Face

But that doesn’t mean fat around the face doesn’t exist. In fact, excess fat in the face is quite common, affecting people in a wide variety of ways. It’s just that we typically don’t think about it that way. Liposuction of the face can help diminish this excess fat in a way that may help make you look more fit and more youthful.

Liposuction around the face is a particularly potent procedure for patients who, otherwise, are within reach of their ideal body weight, if only because it can help sculpt the body in a way that, otherwise, is terribly difficult to achieve.

Does Fat Form Around the Face?

Fat is, in many ways, omnipresent. It’s woven throughout your body, and it can collect in some very unexpected places. That’s why liposuction surgeons, generally, have found ways to be more flexible. The face is no exception. Fat has a way of forming around certain areas that can be unflattering to look at and frustrating to eliminate.

Those areas might include:

  • Cheeks: Fat around the cheeks can be quite frustrating. They can make you look less mature and less serious than you want to. And “chubby cheeks” can often undermine the effect of other, more fit areas of your body. In other words, you can feel unfit despite your overall health.
  • Jawline: Fat around the jawline (including the chin) can be stubborn and difficult to get rid of. It can make patients look “full faced” even when they are otherwise quite slim. For patients who want a proportional, athletic-looking jaw, this can be quite frustrating. Sometimes fat around the jawline “evolves” into what are known as jowls, the excess tissue that sags beyond the jawline. For many patients, jowls are an undeniable sign of aging, so the impulse to eliminate them is quite strong.
  • Double Chin: Known medically as “submental fat,” the dreaded double chin can develop for any number of reasons, not all of them connected to diet or exercise. However, a double chin is often a source of discomfort—both physically and mentally. Today, there are several ways to treat a double chin, liposuction among them (but many patients will also try the injectable Kybella).

Liposuction is usually able to achieve results for each of these problem areas. However, it’s worth noting a couple of things. Liposuction of the cheeks should be carried out quite cautiously and with an exceptionally skilled and knowledgeable surgeon. This type of liposuction can be quite delicate. Additionally, liposuction of the face above the nose is not recommended. In other words, avoid liposuction of the forehead.

How is Liposuction of the Face Achieved?

During most liposuction procedures, a small incision is made in the target area and then a cannula (a small tube responsible for suction) is inserted to remove the fat. Liposuction of the face is not terribly dissimilar, though there are a few ways in which it is more challenging.

When patients want liposuction of the face, they’re usually looking to eliminate a very small amount of fat (relatively). Essentially, a patient that wants liposuction of the tummy will likely be looking to remove a significantly higher volume of excess fat than someone who is working to get jowls mitigated.

As such, surgeons are able to use a much finer cannula than they might with other liposuction procedures. Often, surgeons will use a cannula that is only 1.4mm in diameter. That’s pretty tiny. But it affords surgeons an exceptional amount of control.

That control is quite necessary because symmetry is so very important to the face. Now, the fat deposits along your jawline or in your cheeks are not always symmetrical, but most patients want as much symmetry as possible when it comes to their final overall results.

That means liposuction of the face is usually a very specific and very careful procedure. Most patients are encouraged to take extra time to select a surgeon they feel comfortable with and confident in.

What Other Procedures is Liposuction Used With?

Liposuction of the face is often combined with other facial plastic surgery procedures in order to create a holistic new look. Many patients who are looking to eliminate excess fat around the face are also looking to appear a little more youthful. In this way, liposuction is often combined with a facelift procedure in order to achieve the overall effect.

In fact, it goes both ways. Patients who are interested in a facelift will often opt also for liposuction as a way to achieve an overall more youthful appearance. That’s because excess fat and excess skin can combine to cause premature aging (at least in terms of appearances).

In fact, it’s not uncommon to use liposuction as a way to contour the face, in order to help bring out the best in a wide variety of procedures. For example, it would not be uncommon to see:

  • Liposuction and neck lift
  • Liposuction and chin augmentation
  • Liposuction and blepharoplasty (eyelid lift)
  • Liposuction and brow lift
  • Liposuction and rhinoplasty

Now, that doesn’t mean that if you get liposuction and rhinoplasty you’ll be getting liposuction of the nose (such a thing, to my knowledge, does not exist). Rather, it means that a rhinoplasty will change the way your nose looks. To make your face as cohesive as possible, your surgeon may recommend some minor liposuction to ensure that all of your features work together.

Non Surgical Option

Because non surgical procedures are all the rage these days, we thought it would be worth touching on one way you could approximate one of these combinations with the use of non-invasive procedures. If you were to combine Kybella injections with a non surgical nose job procedure (as developed by Dr. Alexander Rivkin in Los Angeles), you can alter the shape of your nose and eliminate a double chin.

While these results would likely be more subtle than their surgical equivalents, they do afford patients the ability to see results without going through surgery or recovery. In that way, they’re a viable non surgical way to achieve results that can change your jawline and your nose to go along with it.

The Way to Get an Athletic Looking Face

For most people, it’s difficult to exercise the fat away from your face. There’s no amount of muscle toning that can do much for chubby cheeks. For many people, those chubby cheeks will be an endearing and wonderful quality. But others will want to eliminate this particular facial feature, finding it uncomfortable.

Those people might be wondering, can you get liposuction around the face? The answer is yet, but you need to find a surgeon who will treat facial liposuction with the care and deference that it deserves. After all, the fat in your cheeks or along your jawline could be quite delicate. When it comes to getting liposuction around the face, take your time and find the right surgeon for the job!
