Much of that comes down to the elasticity of your skin. When you’re young, your skin can absorb much more damage because it’s much more elastic. As you age, that elasticity diminishes and the damage takes its toll.

- Get plenty of sleep: When you lose sleep, your skin pays the price. When you’re well rested, your body has time to recover from the trials of the day–and that means your skin has time to recover, too. Sleeping can help keep down the amount of toxins that are running around in your body at any given time, which is good for your skin.
- Apply sunscreen: The sun is one of the leading causes of wrinkles. It just causes so much damage over time. So keeping yourself sunscreened can definitely help in the long run. This means you should also avoid going to a tanning bed or anything like it. Not only do tanning beds cause cancer (studies suggest), but they can create and exacerbate wrinkles as well.
- Quit smoking: If you smoke, you’re doing terrible, terrible damage to your body–and your skin is no exception. Nothing causes more wrinkles than smoking. So one of the best things you can do for your skin, really, is to quit. You might not be able to walk back any of the wrinkles you’ve already created, but you’ll likely be able to at least stop any more damage from occurring due to smoking.
Treatments That Help Prevent Wrinkles
Of course, if you aren’t content to do the day-to-day things that might help prevent wrinkles, there are always some treatment options from your local cosmetic surgery practice or medical spa. You’ll usually find the basic facials and peels among your options.
But there’s also a new way of preventing wrinkles that has suddenly become quite popular among Millennials (which, actually, sort of makes sense, as they’re the group of people most likely to have a vested interest in preventing wrinkles in the first place). That treatment is Botox.
Botox, of course, is widely used to treat certain types of wrinkles once they’ve developed. But there are some studies that suggest Botox can prevent wrinkles as well as treat them. And so with a few quick injections, patients can keep wrinkles from popping up in the first place. It’s easy to see the appeal.
Whatever your opinion on them, it’s important to remember that wrinkles do happen. And that when they happen, well, it isn’t the end of the world. It’s something that happens quite naturally.
