Did Amber Portwood

Get Liposuction?

Amber Portwood opens up about getting liposuction in time for her wedding. That definitely lets us talk about the right way to get liposuction—including when you should and when you shouldn’t.

News tends to swirl when celebrities get plastic surgery, so we’re not surprised that someone is pressing Amber Portwood on her liposuction surgery. To be totally fair, it’s not as though Portwood has been particularly opaque about what she’s had done. She told People recently that she had liposuction on “my sides and my stomach, but not a lot.”

Interviewing Amber Portwood on her Liposuction Surgery

Portwood also mentioned something about getting a slight breast lift performed (not using the most invasive technique). These procedures are not uncommon, especially when it comes to the liposuction aspect. Indeed, liposuction in a modern surgical clinic is often used to address smaller areas of the body. It’s almost never used as a massive weight loss tool.

That’s why Portwood’s frank discussion about her plastic surgery results might be a helpful starting point for our own conversation about the topic.

Getting Liposuction for a Special Occasion

Amber Portwood’s interview focuses largely on balancing her hectic life in the middle of planning a wedding. It’s in that context that she discusses getting liposuction—trying to achieve that hourglass figure again. That’s actually a pretty common reason to get liposuction (on both counts).

In fact, liposuction patients will often cite two distinct motivations for undergoing this procedure:

  • An upcoming special occasion: Something like a wedding is kind of nice, because you have lots of time to plan. And when you have that much time to plan, you can think about a liposuction procedure. Keep in mind, it might take several months for you to successfully make it through your recovery: for all the swelling and bruising to diminish and for your final results to become visible. In other words, whatever event you want to look your best for, you’ll definitely want to give yourself plenty of time to heal.
  • Getting back your old shape: One of the other reasons that many people are drawn to liposuction is because it’s a procedure that can help you get back your more youthful-looking body. Of course, liposuction can’t turn back the clock all on its own. It’s not going to make you actually look younger. But it can help eliminate some areas of fat that develop (and persist) over time. This can help you achieve a look that you simply have not been able to since you were young.

Can’t You Just Lose Weight the Old Fashioned Way?

Whenever anyone mentions liposuction, there’s always somebody in the room that points out the virtues of losing weight the good, old-fashioned way. And that person wouldn’t necessarily be wrong. Losing weight through diet and exercise leads to some significant health benefits (both physical and mental). However, diet and exercise are not necessarily very controllable.

What we mean by that is that diet and exercise cannot target areas of fat on your body. Even if you do everything perfectly, you may end up with areas of fat that are immune to diet and exercise. These stubborn areas of fat can stick around through the most rigorous diet and exercise regimen, meaning the only way to get rid of them is with the help of a surgical procedure.

Liposuction is designed to be precisely that kind of procedure. Surgeons make a small incision and then use a tiny tube called a cannula to remove unwanted fat. This is a much more controlled process today than it was years ago (and as such is often referred to as “lipo sculpting”). That makes liposuction an excellent option for people who want to get rid of those stubborn areas of fat but still want results to look natural.

You’ll just want to give yourself plenty of time to heal. As Dr. Mark Bosbous, a Milwaukee area liposuction surgeon, says on his website, lipo can take several weeks to recover from, even though the incision is quite small.

Getting the Body You Want—Just Like Amber Portwood

The nice thing is that you don’t have to be a reality television star to get the benefits of a liposuction procedure. All you have to do is talk to your local plastic surgeon. After all, it’s your surgeon who will be able to tell you the best way to achieve your desired results. We’re definitely thankful for the openness of Amber Portwood on her liposuction surgery. It’s allowed us to have a great discussion!
