Modern Lipo

Summary: If you’re planning on getting liposuction to trim down some unwanted fat, you probably can’t wait to see your final results. Liposuction patients should keep in mind that their end results aren’t only about choosing a cosmetic surgeon specializing in liposuction and ensuring candidacy. A major influencer of your liposuction results is also whether you allow your body a proper recovery.

To ensure you get the most out of body contouring that you can, follow these five recovery tips for beautiful liposuction results.

1. Follow Doctor’s Orders

Listening to your surgeon is the single most important aspect of a quality recovery. While you may be tempted to not wear your compression bandage or engage in more strenuous activity than recommended, following your doctor’s orders to a T will help ensure that you don’t take any unnecessary risks. Remember that your surgeon has been trained extensively in creating optimal liposuction results, and post-surgical instructions are an integral part. If you feel unclear about whether you can participate in a specific activity, don’t hesitate to call your surgeon for clarification.

2. Keep Sodium Levels Low

Salty foods can contribute to inflammation. Inflammation can not only impede the healing process, but can also make you feel bloated, which is probably not high on your list of desired sensations after a fat-reducing procedure. In fact, liposuction patients are recommended to limit their sodium intake for two to four months after surgery to limit bloating, discomfort and swelling.

3. Drink Plenty of Clear Fluids

Staying hydrated after liposuction is critical in aiding your body’s natural healing process. Not only does your body need plenty of water to recovery as quickly and comfortably as possible, but drinking lots of clear fluids can also help minimize fluid retention after liposuction, a fairly common side effect during the recovery stage. Be sure to avoid drinking alcohol so that your body doesn’t become dehydrated.

4. Engage in Mild Activity

While you should avoid strenuous exercise for several weeks after liposuction, patients are recommended to engage in mild activity like walking the evening of liposuction, or the morning after at latest. Mild activity can help prevent blood clots from forming in the legs or lungs, which is always a risk when patients are confined to a bed after any surgery. Increasing your blood flow with light activity also helps your body recovery from your procedure. Remember that in order to maintain your liposuction results, you should adopt an exercise routine if you don’t already have one. Walking can be a great step towards integrating a workout routine into your schedule.

5. Stay Patient and Have Realistic Expectations

Depending on the areas treated and the amount of liposuction performed, it may take several months or longer before you can see your final results. Try not to become discouraged if your results don’t appear as dramatic as you’d expected after only a couple of weeks have gone by. For most patients, swelling subsides after about three months, while the final results of liposuction may not fully develop for up to a year. Remain patient with your body’s healing process and maintain realistic expectations about your results. Most patients are very pleased with their liposuction results, but keep in mind that the procedure has its limitations and you will have to supplement the fat removal treatment with a healthy diet and regular exercise.
